We were both taken to the same hospital as he had tried to cut his own throat and wrists, causing only superficial wounds, from the hospital he was taken straight to jail. Where he would remain until a trial was set. The charges were numerous but the main charges were Attempted Murder as well as Felony Spousal Abuse with two enhancements: Great Bodily Injury and Premeditation.

Shen hired a Defense Attorney from out of town and I had the Deputy District Attorney, as well as a Detective from the Modesto Police Department and an Advocate from The Women’s Haven Center.

The Preliminary Hearing was set for January 7th at 9:30am at which time I would have to testify, and the trial would be set.

We knew that because of the context of him asking me to come alone the premeditation would be hard to prove, and even with them proving that, getting a jury to convict him to the maximum would be even more difficult. And at the absolute maximum with premeditation he would only get 10 years. So when the Defense offered us a 6 year sentence of which he would be incarcerated 4 years 8 months, we were very happy. I had to weigh all my options and make the decision. I was 20 years old, this controlling abusive man had taken 5 years of my life, then tried to kill me, and now I had to choose either to give up who knows how much more of my life for a trial or to take the 6 years and be able to finally move on.

Monday December 20th, 1999 I would tell the District Attorney that I would accept the offer. Decmber 29th 1999 Shennadoah Desota Maxwell pled guilty to Felony Spousal Abuse with great bodily injury for a sentence of 7 years, which he would serve 5 years 8 months. To be released in October of 2005.

January 3rd 2000, my 21st birthday, I had court at 8:30am for the restraining order. Which was dropped due to his sentencing.

September 27th 2000 I received my certified Divorce papers. I was finally free.
