A 20-year-old Modesto woman remained in serious condition late Tuesday after being stabbed several times during an argument with her estranged husband, Modesto police reported.
The man later turned a knife on himself, cutting his wrists and throat, police said. He was in stable condition Tuesday night at a local hospital. Once he's released, the 25-year-old man will be booked on attempted murder and domestic battery charges, Lt. Kevin Finnerty said.
Authorities did not release the name of the victim or her attacker.
Officers were called to a single-story, four-unit complex in the 2200 block of Peppermint Drive off Oakdale Road in east Modesto at 2:15 p.m. They found the woman in a driveway, bleeding from her head, but conscious.
Neighbors said the woman had staggered from the multiplex, with her hands clutching her bloated, bloody face. Just before that, police said, she had smashed through the living room window to escape her husband. She suffered a laceration to her right foot when she went through the window.
"There was so much blood," Jennifer Jenkins, 15, said. "I was just standing here talking to my friends when I looked at her and ... oh my God. I've never seen anything like that before."
The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her hands as she tried to fend off her attacker, a deep wound to the back of her head, and a broken nose, Sgt. Mike Harden said.
The woman had recently separated from her husband of four years and had returned to the multiplex Tuesday afternoon to retrieve the rest of her clothes and personal items, police said.
Police cordoned off the area and circled the multiplex. Four officers, one with a shotgun drawn, clustered in the narrow walkway leading to the units.
They found him in the bathtub of his residence. He was partly submerged in a foot of bloody water, officer Steve Davis said. He had slashed his wrists and had tried to cut his throat, suffering superficial wounds.
Concerned neighbors gathered in groups on their front lawns.
"This is scary," said Lydia DeMello, who lives across the street from the multiplex. "All the kids are going to be walking home from school any time now. This isn't something I want my children to see ... a woman across the street getting stabbed."
